17th Judicial District Attorney Brian S. Mason Praises Passage of Gun Storage Bill

District Attorney Mason was the only DA in Colorado to testify in favor of the bill

Brighton, CO —Today, 17th Judicial District Attorney Brian S. Mason praised the passage of HB21-1106 Safe Storage of Firearms. The bill has been sent to Colorado Governor Jared Polis’ desk for final approval. District Attorney Mason testified in favor of the bill before the Colorado State Senate’s Judiciary Committee.

HB21-1106 requires that firearms be responsibly and securely stored when they are not in use or not within the immediate control of an adult to prevent access by unsupervised juveniles and other unauthorized users.

Nearly 1,300 children under the age of 18 die from shootings every year. Most of the victims of unintentional shootings are shot by a friend or relative. Nearly 40% of all unintentional shooting deaths among children 11-14 years of age occur in the home of a friend. “I am genuinely pleased that HB21-1106 passed both houses of the State Legislature and is now on the Governor’s desk,” DA Brian Mason stated.

“Safely storing a gun is a common sense measure that every parent – gun owner or non-gun owner –can get behind. We want our children to be safe.

“I see the tragic results of gun violence nearly every day. This bill will help prevent gun violence, particularly accidental gun violence, and will literally save lives. As District Attorney, my top priority is protecting the community. That’s precisely what this bill does and I am proud to support it.”
