District Attorney’s Office, Criminal Justice Partners Unite in Support of Access to Justice with Return of the Sean May Memorial 5K Run/Walk

October 14, 2025

Brighton, CO — The District Attorney’s Office is proud to support the restart of the Sean May Memorial 5K Run/Walk, happening this Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Barr Lake State Park in Brighton. The event resumes in person after years of interruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reaffirming our commitment to access to justice and community solidarity across the criminal justice system.

This year marks the 12th annual run, beginning at 9:00 a.m., with proceeds benefiting the C. Vincent Phelps Self-Help Resource Center as well as the 17th Judicial District’s access to justice initiatives.

About Sean May
Sean May served as a Chief Deputy District Attorney at the District Attorney’s Office, where he served for nearly seven years before he was murdered outside his home in August of 2008. During his nearly seven years with the District Attorney’s Office, he handled thousands of cases and served in numerous assignments, including in our Child Victim Unit, where he prosecuted offenders who commit serious crimes against children, and as the leader of our newest attorneys in County Court. Sean was deeply respected for his integrity, for treating all participants in the justice system with dignity and respect, and for his pledge to seek justice done for victims and this community.

“Sean May was a public servant of the highest degree,” said District Attorney Brian Mason. “Sean was a model of integrity and believed passionately in fairness, dignity, and bridging gaps in our justice system. He was also a personal friend and mentor to me and I mourn, along with all my colleagues, his unspeakable loss. Bringing back this event reminds us that access to justice is not just an ideal—it’s a responsibility we all share. This run reaffirms our resolve to serve our community, honor Sean’s legacy, and strengthen the bonds across agencies who champion justice for all.”

Members of the public, law enforcement, legal community, and advocates are welcome to join in walking, running, or supporting in other ways. For registration, route and race-day details, and sponsorship opportunities, please visit the official race page: Sean May Memorial Run.
