Adams County Defendant Convicted of Murder, Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Fatally Stabbing Brother With Sword

Brighton, CO — Today, District Attorney Brian Mason is announcing the First-Degree Murder Conviction and Life in Prison Without the Possibility of Parole sentence for Kenneth Sargent, 62. An Adams County Jury found Sargent guilty of First-Degree Murder on December 7, 2023, following a nine-day jury trial in Adams County District Court. On December 19, 2023, an Adams County District Judge sentenced Sargent to Life in Prison Without the Possibility of Parole.
On June 26, 2021, Kenneth Sargent was involved in a verbal disagreement with his brother Roy Sargent at a home along 118th Place in Westminster. During the verbal dispute, Kenneth pulled out a large sword and swung it in Roy's direction. Kenneth stabbed Roy once in the heart and the arm. The altercation occurred on the front porch. After Roy was struck with the sword, he stumbled and fell to the ground outside.
A neighbor who witnessed the dispute called 911. The neighbor rushed to Roy's aid, but the victim quickly lost consciousness after saying, "he stabbed me." Officers arrived, and Roy was transported to a local hospital where he later died. Kenneth remained in the home and engaged in a standoff with police before he eventually surrendered and was taken into custody. The neighbor who witnessed the dispute told police that he heard Kenneth say to Roy, "I'm going to kill you."
Kenneth Sargent pleaded Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity, but an Adams County Jury ultimately convicted him of First-Degree Murder on December 7, 2023. An Adams County District Court Judge sentenced Kenneth to Life Without the Possibility of Parole in the Department of Corrections on December 19, 2023.
"This was a horrific and tragic case,” said District Attorney Brian Mason. “The defendant used a sword – in broad daylight -- to take the life of his brother. I appreciate the hard work of my team on this difficult case. My thoughts are and will continue to be with the family who had to endure a level of pain and suffering that is truly impossible to comprehend."
Chief Deputy District Attorney Ally Baber and Senior Lead Deputy District Attorney Katelyn Konecny led the prosecution of this case.
