17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office Files Murder Charge Against 15-Year-Old in Adams County

April 3, 2023

Brighton, CO —Today, the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is announcing the filing of Murder and Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft charges related to the homicide of a 44-year-old male at a home in the 400 Block of North 6th Avenue in Brighton.

The 15-year-old defendant is charged with:
  • First-Degree Murder (F1)
  • First-Degree Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft (F5)
  • Possession of a Handgun by a Juvenile (M2)
The case was filed in Adams County District Court. However, because the juvenile defendant is under the age of 16, a judge will ultimately determine whether the case remains in Juvenile Court or is transferred to the District Court. The process is often lengthy, and until the Judge officially transfers the case to the District Court, the District Attorney's Office is unable to name the juvenile defendant. Booking photos are not available for juvenile defendants even when they are direct filed into District Court.

The filing of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual(s) committed a crime(s) under Colorado laws. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. See Colo RPC 3.6.
