Defendant Convicted of Kidnapping 12-Year-Old Broomfield Girl on Walk Home from School

Broomfield, CO —Today, District Attorney Brian Mason is announcing the Second-Degree Kidnapping conviction of Shane Hammond, 29. A Broomfield County Jury found Hammond guilty on Friday, April 8, 2022, after five days of trial.

On August 19, 2019, a 12-year-old girl was walking home from Westlake Middle School in the Broadlands in Broomfield. Shane Hammond was waiting outside of his truck and when the girl walked by, he pushed her inside. The defendant attempted to drive away, but the girl escaped and ran home. The girl recalled yelling “momma” as she attempted to escape the kidnapping.

Through the use of surveillance video captured in the area and months of detailed investigative work by the Broomfield Police Department, Shane Hammond was identified as the suspect and arrested in March of 2020.

“This case represents every child and parent’s worst nightmare,” said District Attorney Brian Mason. “The defendant’s actions were unconscionable and despicable. His actions cannot diminish the bravery of this 12-year-old girl, however. She is an inspiration to our entire community. I am thankful to the Broomfield Police Department for their extraordinary work on this case, our prosecutors and staff for securing a conviction, and the jury for reaching a just verdict.”

On Friday, April 8, 2022, Hammond was convicted of:

  • Second-Degree Kidnapping (F4)

Hammond is being held without bond until sentencing on June 3, 2022, at 8:30am.

Deputy District Attorney’s Kate Armstrong and Dan Martin led the prosecution of this case.
