Update: 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office Files Murder Charge Against Adams County Juvenile

October 25, 2024

Brighton, CO —Today, the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is announcing an update to the filing decision related to the shooting that caused the death of a 15-year-old victim and an injury to another victim in Rotella Park on Saturday, October 12, 2024.

Originally the District Attorney's Office filed a First-Degree Murder charge and various other charges against a juvenile who was believed to be the alleged shooter; however, new evidence that came to light after the filing decision was made, led to an amendment of the original charges against that juvenile and new charges being filed against a different juvenile who is now believed to be the alleged shooter in this case.

The new juvenile is charged with:
  • First-Degree Murder -- Extreme Indifference (F1)
  • First-Degree Attempted Murder -- Extreme Indifference (F2) (6 Counts)
  • First-Degree Assault -- Extreme Indifference (F3)
  • Possession of a Handgun by a Juvenile (M2)
  • Aggravated Juvenile Offender (Sentence Enhancer) (7 Counts)
The original juvenile is now charged with:
  • Possession of a Handgun by a Juvenile (M2)
The cases were both filed in Adams County Juvenile Court. Due to the juveniles' ages and the filing of the cases in Juvenile Court, no further information about the juveniles or the facts can be released by the District Attorney's Office.

The filing of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual(s) committed offense(s) under Colorado laws. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. See Colo RPC 3.6.
